Prints, ink on various papers
Genes lay down a blueprint but the development of the organism is profoundly affected by fluctuating variables in the environment. These images, looking for a visual equivalent for such uniformity subject to variation, were an experiment in image-reproduction. A single mouse-shaped pad soaked in sepia ink was laid in a shallow dish and successive prints pulled rapidly from it. The variations in the prints resulted from differences in the printing paper, the ink drying out in the pad, the ambient temperature. Even the angle of the sun through the window had an effect. Contrasts have been digitally enhanced.
